The Wakefield High School boys and girls varsity and jayvee soccer teams
received a sportsmanship award last week from the Commonwealth Soccer
Officials Association.
The association issues an award each fall to the public school soccer
program that demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship during the 2004
spring high school campaign. The award is based on the overall behavior of not just a teamıs player and coaches, but its fans throughout the course of the season. Commonwealth referees use a scoring system to rate a teamıs sportsmanship for each game. The results are sent to the associationıs commissioner. At the end of the spring season, the evaluations are totaled.
The winner is announced in the fall. This gives us a lot of satisfaction, and weıre honored by being selected as good sportsmen, said Noel Deskins, Wakefieldıs director of student activities.
In soccer there are sometimes a lot of yellow cards sometimes, and even red cards. So to win that award is really something. Weıre proud of that.
Last fall the Wakefield football team won the sportsmanship award from a
football referees association. The Wakefield soccer program received a sportsmanship plaque from the Commonwealth Association. It will remain at the school until a new winner is chosen.
This is the associationıs way of recognizing those teams that demonstrate consistent sportsmanship, said Jim Zok, who is a member of the Commonwealthıs board of directors and was on hand to present the plaque to some of the Wakefield players and coaches last week.³We think this is a big deal, and the Wakefield principal [Doris Jackson] was very happy. Referees appreciate those teams that make an honest effort regarding sportsmanship.
